SURGE PROTECTION DEVICES

Surge Protection Devices keep your site running when lightning or switching surges hit. They protect the power and data systems your business relies on, cutting the risk of damaged equipment, emergency call‑outs and unexpected downtime.

Direct Strike’s engineers work with you to design, supply, install and commission Surge Protection Devices that integrate with your overall lightning protection and earthing design, in line with EN 62305‑4 and IEC 60364‑5‑53. Using the lightning protection zone concept, each device is positioned so surge energy is safely diverted before it reaches sensitive equipment.

From main incomers and distribution boards to control panels and IT networks, Direct Strike delivers surge protection that balances performance, reliability and cost, providing robust, long‑term protection for your people, your operations and your assets.

SPDs for Power and IT Systems

Power Systems

IT & Data Systems

  • SPDs are coordinated from the main incomer to local distribution and final circuits using the lightning protection zone (LPZ) concept, in line with EN 62305‑4, IEC 60364‑5‑53 and EN 61643.

  • Type 1 SPDs (lightning current arresters) handle high‑energy 10/350 µs lightning currents at the origin of the installation.

  • Type 2 and type 3 SPDs provide staged protection downstream, forming a robust barrier against switching and lightning‑induced surges.

  • IT, telecom and data systems need a different SPD strategy that takes into account voltage, current, signal transmission type, frequency and signal type so protection does not compromise signal quality.

  • Lightning protection zones, expected energy discharge, device arrangement and terminal equipment immunity are all considered when selecting and locating SPDs.

  • This ensures critical communication and control signals remain stable even during severe surge events.
