SPDs are coordinated from the main incomer to local distribution and final circuits using the lightning protection zone (LPZ) concept, in line with EN 62305‑4, IEC 60364‑5‑53 and EN 61643.
Type 1 SPDs (lightning current arresters) handle high‑energy 10/350 µs lightning currents at the origin of the installation.
Type 2 and type 3 SPDs provide staged protection downstream, forming a robust barrier against switching and lightning‑induced surges.

IT, telecom and data systems need a different SPD strategy that takes into account voltage, current, signal transmission type, frequency and signal type so protection does not compromise signal quality.
Lightning protection zones, expected energy discharge, device arrangement and terminal equipment immunity are all considered when selecting and locating SPDs.
This ensures critical communication and control signals remain stable even during severe surge events.
